And this is how it would be used in applications that require direct sound input, like the media player:
http://www.imagebam.com/image/920a1620009224The slider would change volume for all aplications in the same category (in my example, mplayer & rhythmbox which share the "Playing multimedia" category) and the combo box would instantly change to a different profile.
The configuration dialog for scenarios should be open through an item in the standard windows menu.

And an idea to introduce the controls for volume and mute:

The volume bar shows and sets the current volume just for the selected category in the priority list, and is updated when a new category is selected.
The "---disable sounds below this line---" would be not selectable, and everything below should be grayed out to enhance the idea that those sounds are muted.
