I think the point of those responses was that one can have a million
good ideas but they won't matter unless someone implements them, not
to put down non-developer efforts (design, specifications). In open
source projects, an "ok" solution with patch/code nearly always wins
over "perfect" solution without patch/code.

Studies and thoughts are of course always welcome, it's just a fact of
life that most of them will not be implemented, regardless of the
quality of the thoughts in question.

The list archives contain good examples of this, there's loads of UI
discussions with great(and not-so-great) ideas. Which went nowhere
since nobody started to code.
