Another reason for having a separate Stop button would be
accessibility-- buttons whose labels change dynamically are a bit of a
pain for screenreaders, because they have to notice and tell you what's
happened somehow.
Having said that, I think the HIG team did vaguely agree in a bug report
somewhere that Stop wasn't strictly necessary so we shouldn't insist
that it was, although personally I always find myself irritated by apps
that don't have it too.
