Nothing extensive, no. To some extent I see that as the job of the
GNOME Documentation Styleguide (which anyone who's developing a UI would
ideally be familiar with as well)-- documentation is more than just
online help. But I agree that expecting someone to be familiar with two
large documents just to write a decent error message is unrealistic, and
the HIG could probably offer more here.
