[Usability] Response times

Table 7.1 of the HIG lists some acceptable response times for typical
events. Does anyone know of a reference (textbooks, papers) for these
numbers?

The stuff I have been able to google up generally agrees about the
order of magnitude, but I can't find much real research on the
subject.
