The reason we didn't mimic this behaviour is because GtkTreeViews can
have multiple columns, so left/right arrows have to be reserved for
moving betweeen them.
We do have backspace to select the parent node, though... perhaps we
could also implement Shift-Backspace or something to select+collapse the
parent node. File a bug :)
