Until there is a perfect mime-database/file system and all applications
use it or magic, this discussion is moot.  Users who use applications
that need extension will require them to be visible and editable.  Users
who need to exchange information with Windows will also need them
visible and editable.

In the mean time, users may name their files according to how their
applications require.
