While we are talking about configuration, I wanted to add some ideas
and requests that were brought to me by Debian users.

They are looking for a way to set tracker options system wide (via
/etc/xdg/) and possibly a way to lock down certain options.

Would something like this be possible with the current architecture?

nope - that would require gconf support. Then again waiting for
gtksettings/dconf might be better?

Yeah, that is suppose to happen soon, so, definitely think that its the better
solution.

in any event it would be easy to add different compile time backends as
the config is now nicely abstracted

True, but I think that waiting for dconf is the better option.
