I have a so-called «multimedia keyboard» with a set of additional keys
like volume control etc. 

X window system allows to bind keycodes produced by such keys to
symbolic names like «XF86Launch1» etc. (just like arrow keys have
keysyms «Up» or «Down») so you can use these names in utilities for
convinience You may see keysyms assigned to keys of your keyboard with
xev(1), for example.
