ok. I'm starting to understand. Suddenly this makes a lot of sense.
Would be great if I had really transparent background, and 100%
opaque letters. But still can't get this to work, 1.3.2 with your
patch.

- xcompmgr was started *before* gnome-terminal 
  I verified this with 'ps auxw | grep gnome-terminal'
- then I start gnome-terminal
- go into Profile->Effects to change transparency

I got the result as on the attached screenshot: xcompmgr printed some
messages and gnome-terminal had:
- opaque frame
- fake transparency - the xterm below is not visible.

xcompmgr version here is 1.1.1+cvs.20051218-1 backported from debian
experimental to debian etch. I'm using transparency configuration as
explained in:
