It's also possible to get the cover file information from desktop
entry files (http://www.freedesktop.org/Standards/desktop-entry-spec).
I think the standard isn't exactly for this purpose, but may be used
this way. This is the way coverhunter
(http://coverhunter.sourceforge.net) and albumart
(http://louhi.kempele.fi/~skyostil/projects/albumart/) stores
information about the covers they download.
