Right. I already pushed the new icon to master (after creating a
gnome-3-18 branch). I will now cherry-pick it to other relevant
branches.

It has been brought to my attention that my message might have come across as an approval of our usage of the logo.
To clear any possible misunderstanding, I want to reiterate that I was expressing my personal opinion (and not the board's), and that I was exclusively referring to the update of our existing icons to the new logo.

Ekaterina's point about making sure our usage is complying with Google's trademark requirements still stands independently of which version of the logo we use, and I agree it would be a good idea to seek an explicit permission.
