Thank you for an informative review of the options for both client and
server.
On the Orca side, when Arch Linux updates to the latest Thunderbird, it
will be interesting to find out whether there are accessibility
improvements. Thunderbird has apparently become a much more active
project lately.

Hello,
At the one hand nextcloud has everything included but performance is
not that great and it has a lot of corner case issues.
Instead I am using python 3 based server called radicale for caldav
and carddav behing a nginx as a reverse proxy authenticating users
through ldap. Of course it has ability to configure user credentials
inside a simple configuration file if you would like to make it simpler.
On android the only serious robust app is DAVx⁵. However recently I
have found out I have issues finding accessible calendar app for
android. Android AOSP includes inaccessible calendar app since android
12. Lineage OS calendar app called etar is partially accessible so
only the agenda view is accessible.
On the desktop I like to use thunderbird with its built-in calendar
and addressbook. This way I have both calendar and contacts hosted on
my own server and synced on desktop and mobile. Of course thunderbird
calendar has some accessibility issues but it has improved
significantly in terms of accessibility since lightning calendar addon
has been included to the thunderbird it-self.
Thunderbird can also handle tasks. On android you will need to get an
app for handling tasks. Opentask has some unlabelled buttons but is
otherwise usable and works great with DAVx⁵.
If you would like to get an ability to have your calendars and
contacts versioned and encrypted, you might like to explore etesync
server, android app and desktop apps are open-source. I am not sure
about etesync status in Thunderbird though.
Greetings
Peter

Thank you - that sets me on the right path.

It may be overkill for what you're trying to do, but I run
NextCloud, which is easy to install and includes a fairly good
calendar. There are a couple of good CalDAV/CardDAV applications on
F-Droid that work for me to get my NextCloud calendar and contacts
to sync with my phone. Evolution also works with CalDAV servers, and
I believe Thunderbird now can without an extension as well, though I
haven't tried it yet.
