Live iso's are using technology named squashfs.


that's why live isos are so small in compare with installed systems still providing the same functionality.


I think such technology may be in theory used for installed system, which will reduce it's size, but make it unmodifiable.


you also can use mksquashfs tool to package an existing filesystem, which should allow to build any configuration that you want on an other machine and then install it to this small drive.
