I would be interested to know how Coreboot handles this situation.

Another option would be remote administration at the firmware level
(IPMI, or possibly Intel Management Engine, which my laptop supports - I
don't know whether it can be achieved over a text-based interface,
though). If you have a second machine, this should be feasible.
