Re: [orca-list] List item counts sometimes spoken when list item preference is turned off

Joanmarie Diggs aliandika:
So... The first thing is that the checkboxes for what to present during navigation are meant for document content; not GUIs. Granted, that's not especially obvious from the checkbox name. And what it's meant to do is prevent complete announcement of the item itself. In other words, it's not "don't say the list count"; it's "don't mention the list at all." So if we want the role (e.g. list or listbox) but not the count, that would be a different preference I think.

One option is to add yet another new preference (not my personal choice because we already have a ton of preferences). Another is to not present the number of children when the verbosity level is set to brief. I just committed the latter to master. I hope that it addresses your concerns.

Perfect. Thanks for clearing that up. It's working exactly as I expected now. I set my verbosity to brief as soon as I can whenever setting up any system or user account for the first time for myself, and leave it at verbose by default on new systems I install for others. So this behavior works out perfectly, as all these little things are controlled with a single preference instead of having to tturn everything off individually or leave it all on. The only thing that may work better is a verbosity tab that would have all the checkboxes for document presentation, child position, number of children, etc, just to consolidate some of the document presentation stuff and other preferences related to speaking of various elements and counts in one single place. But the current behavior works great, at least for me.

Lastly, if memory serves me, the Thunderbird three item count was a Thunderbird bug. I cannot reproduce it in Thunderbird Daily. And for Blueberry, Orca reports the correct item count for me so I'm not sure what's going on with your system.

Thanks for taking a look at that stuff. That explains the Thunderbird issue, as I run the version that is in the ArchLinuxARM repository. Although this was just updated yesterday, it is still version 68.5, so it may not have that bug fixed. Regarding blueberry, I can't figure what may be going on either, as I usually see less devices in the list than the number that is reported. Currently, I see 10 items in the list, and Orca is reporting 10 items. However, I usually have the same 10 items, but Orca most of the time reports anywhere between 11 and 14 items. The reported number of items sometimes increases each time I open blueberry, though this doesn't always occur. In any case, I almost always see the same number of items in the list, regardless of what is reported by Orca. So I really can't figure what is happening, unless phantom devices are appearing in the list, but are maybe greyed out or similar, and for whatever reason, I can't see those devices, though Orca reports them as list items. Thanks again for trying to help me sort this out.
