Unfortunately, the state of accessibility of xfce sounds like it really
hasn't changed in the last 10 years. I haven't heard much of lxde
regarding its accessibility either, though I did hear they were supposed
to switch toolkits some years back. It was supposed to be using qt
eventually, though that may have forked off to lxqt, which I also heard
of not much later. These days, at least from my personal experience,
MATE seems to be about the best thing going. I started using it in 2014,
and the devs were already talking about accessibility and even mentioned
an accessible distro at that time. Since then it has only gotten better,
and it could be said that it is >= GNOME accessibility now. The latest
accessibility issue involved mate-panel getting stuck and opening a menu
on any key press. But this is confirmed fixed now, and was fixed quite
quickly as desktop components go. Hardware support is also quite good,
as MATE will run on just about anything. It's the only full desktop
environment that is fully accessible that can run, albeit slowly, on a
Raspberry Pi 2. It really shines on better computers, but it does run on
just about anything.
