Re: [orca-list] Braille problem on Thunderbird Nightly

Title: signature_jp_2
Hi,

Thanks for these explanations. I reported this:
https://bugzilla.mozilla.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1552212

dont hesitate to precise the problem technically. I did no mention a difference between braille and speech beause too difficult to undertand for upstream devs.

Regards

Hi Jean-Philippe.

Orca more actively tries to reduce chattiness in speech and therefore doesn't present all of the ancestors in quite a few cases. For the braille, it includes more ancestors but tries to shove them out of the way. In this particular Thunderbird issue, it's clearly failing to do the shoving out of the way bit successfully.

I wouldn't object to pruning more ancestors from the braille contents, but I would need input from users such as yourself when that ancestor/context information is helpful in braille versus not. Again, in this particular case, it's clearly not. But are there other cases where an automcomplete/input inside a list should keep the list information?

Hi Joanie,

Many thanks, I will report and investigate. Just a question: why is the speech feedback different from the braille? Is there a filter with speech which does not exist in braille?

Hey Jean-Philippe.

I was able to reproduce the problem. Thanks for the additional details. Here's what seems to be going on: In Thunderbird Nightly, the "To:" field is a child of a listitem inside a listbox. That seems a tad weird to me, but let's accept that as ok for now. The listitem has the following name:

To: To: Cc: Bcc: Reply-To: Newsgroup: Followup-To:

Yes, that entire thing. So you're seeing it in braille as part of the ancestry. I can try to tweak things to make it further off to the left so you'll only find it if you pan left. That said, that's a bogus name, and one which you shouldn't find at all even upon panning left.

Given the bogus nature of the name, along with the fact that the problem doesn't happen in Thunderbird stable, I think it would be great if the Thunderbird developers could figure out why this name is being calculated and shared with us and stop that from happening. :)

In terms of filing a bug, the name can be seen in Accerciser. And since Samuel and Alex each use Accerciser, they should be able to help you with filing the bug against Thunderbird.

Thanks again!

Hi Jean-Philippe.

A few questions to help me triage:
1. Does this problem also happen with Orca stable (i.e. not an Orca
    regression)?

I experience the problem on 3.31.91 as well, indeed.

2. Does this problem also happen with Thunderbird stable (i.e. not a
    Thunderbird regression)?

It does not happen with Thunderbird ESR (60).

3. Could you capture a full debug.out, ideally as small as possible,
in which "To" is spoken, but "follow" is displayed?

http://demo.aaui.eu/debug.out

Hope it will help

Many thanks for your help

Thanks!

Hi,

orca master, TB nightly:
1. Open a new message (-crl-n)
2. The speech says "To" as the caret is in the "To" field. But in
braille, "Follow" is displayed. Just like I had changed, in the combo
box, To into forward.
