Re: [orca-list] Lightning and TB nightly: problem to enter a schedule

Hey Jean-Philippe.

That was super helpful. Thanks! Now I can confirm the problem you describe. What seems to be going on is there is a widget which claims to be an accessible combo box (which is fine). It includes a text entry on screen (which is also fine). That's the good news.

Unfortunately, the entry object is not exposed as a separate accessible object. In addition, the combo box doesn't implement the accessible text interface.

The reason why we care about these things is that what causes Orca to present text changes as a result of typing and location changes as a result of arrowing are accessible text events which are emitted via the accessible text interface. There are text changed events for insertions and deletions and caret moved events when you arrow within the text. Without a widget which implements the accessible text interface, there's presumably nothing to emit these needed events. Orca doesn't know anything happened, hence crickets. What I think would be ideal is if a separate text entry accessible were exposed. Perhaps as a child of the accessible combo box.

These problems can be seen in Accerciser without Orca running. I know that Alex and Samuel each have experience using Accerciser to identify and report issues such as those you describe. Therefore, it would be great if you could work with them to report these issues to Mozilla.

Lastly, regarding what I'd prefer you test: I encourage you to test whatever you want. Regardless of what you test, there's an excellent chance I will ask you follow-up questions. :) For instance, if you test in an older version, I may ask you if you can reproduce it in a newer version (because maybe the problem has already been fixed). If you test in a bleeding-edge version, I may ask you if you can reproduce it in the stable version (because maybe it's a recent regression). In other words, you cannot win. <grin> Jokes aside, I ask these questions because the answers save me time in pinpointing where the problem might be, both in terms of Orca versus not Orca and in terms of versions within the software. And the quicker we can figure out what needs to be fixed where, the quicker we can fix it.

Thanks again!

Oh TB nightly is a mess! :) Devs are aware of it. I wanted to be able to anticipate bugs to help fixing them but...

Well. Here is the situation I understand after chat on #maildev:
- I use TB 66 0a1 (2019-01-14).
- the approach they suggest is: disable your current lightning. Restart TB. Remove lightning. Restart TB. A new lightning extension will appear, from TB nightly, impossible to remove but activable. Enable it.

I hope it helps you. If you would prefer me to test things on a more stable version, tell me.

Hi Jean-Philippe.

I cannot reproduce this with Thunderbird stable (60.4.0). Orca presents
the date field and keyboard events to me. Since you mentioned TB

Indeed.

nightly, I installed the latest version of Thunderbird from the nightly
builds. Lightning is disabled for me and claims to be incompatible with
the unstable version of Thunderbird. So.... What version of Thunderbird
are you using exactly?

In TB tree of the binary nightly, you have an "extensions" folder,
containing xpi, amongst which you have calendar. You can install it
manually through Browse in the addon manager. It is the "official"
Mozilla supported lightning.

Hi,

1. ctrl-i to create the event
2. tab until the date field. When entering the date, no feedback from
Orca. Neither when I type, nor when I review via arrow keys.
3. tab until time field. No feedback as entering and review. To know the
date, tab then shift-tab display the actual time. This workaround (tab
and shift-tab) does not work with the date field.

What kind of bug should I report? Thunderbird/Calendar? Orca?

Thanks
