Re: [orca-list] Ubuntu 18.04: how to open the system menu?

Hi,

I think I have to explain my problem a bit better.
I wanted to open the settings menu of Ubuntu so I could set some key
shortcuts and change the sound volume.
I found a workaround to do this but there will probably be a simpler solution:
* Press the Super key
* type "settings" and Enter
* search with the flat review mode for "Wifi" (this is the first item
of the menu) and click on it with the braille routing buttons
* use the arrow buttons and enter button to browse the menu

Now I encountered also another problem: how to open the menu of an application?
For example: how can I open the menu "Fiele or "Edit" of Firefox?
I assumed that pressing Alt+F would open the "File" menu and Alt+E
would open the "Edit" menu, but this seems not to work.
Any suggestions?

Thanks for the answers,
With kind regards,
Kristof

Try pressing CTRL+INSERT+SPACE on the logon screen. Just tried it and it
works fine.

Hi Andy,

I had the same question but Kristof asked it before I did. I thought about
<ctrl+alt+tab> but I was believing that it could only be used once logged
in. After reading your advice, I tried it on my logon screen and it
worked. Many thanks.

Now, I have another question: Why pressing <insert+spacebar> does not work
to change orca preferences on the logon screen? It did on my previous
16.04 so that I could remove key echo while typing my password.

Many thanks. Have a nice day. Chris D

It depends on your desktop environment. For the most part, Gnome users
have to get focus to the top bar with ALT+CTRL+TAB, then use the arrow
keys to find the system menu. I don't know of a shortcut key for Mate.
Maybe Alex can give feedback on this.

Hi all,

This is mayby a silly question, but how can I open the system menu?
In Ubuntu 16.04 I pressed Alt+F10 but this doesn't work in 18.04.

Thanks in advance,
With kind regards,
Kristof
