Hello,
Alex ARNAUD, le lun. 02 juil. 2018 17:44:16 +0200, a ecrit:
I let Samuel judges if it should be reported against Orca or Speech
Dispatcher.
Well, there is no reason why pico should be able to understand an
orca-specific string ("voix par défaut pico") :)
So the bug is in Orca, it shouldn't be passing this string to
speech-dispatcher.
That being said, speech-dispatcher should also be fixed into using
the default voice when it can't recognize the voice name. ATM it just
becomes completely silent, which is not a good behavior indeed.

How do you make Pico working on Speech Dispatcher and Orca from the
GUI? Last time I've checked selecting pico result in non-speech on
Orca so it is really dangerous if you rely only on speech synthesis.
In the Orca Preferences GUI, go to the Voices tab and in the person
drop-down list, instead of "voice by default pico (<lang>)", choose one
of the proposed voices. This Works Here (TM).
My assumption is that if instead I choose "voice by default (fr)" as I
see in ~/.local/share/orca/user-settings.conf:
"name": "voix par d\u00e9faut pico"
that makes then pico module unhappy, as it says in:
/dev/shm/didier/speech-dispatcher/log/pico.log:
Cannot create a new pico engine (-13): name undefined: voice definition voix par défaut pico
If I choose one of the listed voices instead like virginie(fr), in
~/.local/share/orca/user-settings.conf I see:
"name": "virginie",
and that makes pico happy.
Should I file an issue with speech-dispatcher or orca?
As an aside, in Slint the danger is not so big as the user can still
have speech in console mode ;)
...And anyway pico is not yet officially provided in Slint.
Have a good day,
Didier

take his modifications of the man page for pico2wave:

As you can check, all the Debian patches are applied top this package.

No manual is ever necessary.
May I politely interject here: BULLSHIT. That's the biggest Apple lie of all!
