Hi I’m using antergos 18.02. Doug is right, I’ve used mate on other distros and have had no problems with orca, and there certainly doesn’t seem to be a bug in either orca or speech dispatcher. This problem is exasperating not because it prevents me from using antergos, but because I’ve been a Linux user for six years or so now and I’ve never run into a problem that made Linux unusable. I could install Fenrir, maybe. But if speech dispatcher isn’t speaking, and that seems to be the problem, I doubt Fenrir would work, although it might if it uses espeak directly. Doug’s question about sound issues makes a little bit of sense, but it seems unlikely. I’m using a vizio ct14 ultrabook, which although not rare is a little uncommon. I’m not certain of the exact hardware, but according to the Linux kernel it uses a cirus logic sound chip which has in kernel support, using the snd_codec_sirus module. Ubuntu mate works on it just fine, as does the live image of antergos. Unfortunately I did try gnome and the result was no speech too, so it clearly isn’t limited to mate. Since you’re having issues with speakup, have you tried Fenrir? I haven’t used it in a month or so, but from what people tell me it works very well and works with more synths than speakup does. I’m not saying it’s better than speakup but it’s an alternative since you prefer a text only setup. I have reported this issue to antergos, but only via twitter, so I’m not sure they’ve heard about it. If so, I’m not sure what they can do about it, since it definitely is not an orca issue, and I’m not even certain it’s a speech dispatcher issue, just that no speech comes out of speech dispatcher. My sound is not muted, espeak “hi” results in sound. It is complicated a little bit by the fact that antergos mate setup doesn’t use a sound theme, so there’s no “pop” sound when the volume is adjusted, but I have enough vision to see the overlay. No, mate 1.20 hasn’t hit stable repos yet. But I can’t wait to install it when it does. They’ve done a lot of fantastic work as always. This message has hardened my determination. I’m ditching windows whether or not I can get antergos working. I’d rather use Ubuntu mate than windows. I prefer mate over the windows 10 user interface to be blunt. I’m hoping for a 1.20 ppa, although it seems unlikely since 1.20 requires gtk 3.22 or later, and Ubuntu mate lts uses gtk 3.18. So I’ll have to wait until the antergos bug, whatever it is, is fixed. Thanks Kendell Clark Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: Matthew Dyer Kendall, I have been using antergos in a vm and have no problems here. I will see if I can get an updated image and see if I can test and report back. Has this been reported to antergos already or what? Thanks. I have an older image which will still give you the lates packages durring the install. BTW, I don't think mate 1.20 has hit the stable repos as of yet.
