I use PulseAudio for my setup. ALSA and dmx just caused too many 
problems for me.


$ pacat /dev/urandom


will give you a burst of white noise through Pulse to test it. I use the 
pulseaudio-alsa package. The Arch wiki has some useful tips. I had to 
set tshed=0 in /etc/pulse/default.pa as described to reduce crackling, 
if that helps.
