I am using gnome and I thought gnome would give access
automatically. Do I need to set GTK_MODULES?

No, VMWare uses GTK, but the problem you speak of is one that has essentially
been talked about in this thread. I'm guessing VMWare is still using GTK2,
and depending on the desktop environment you are using, GTK_MODULES is not
set for the root user, hense no feedback until the process is done.
