Re: [orca-list] linux full time

hi
ETI eloquence is the name of the synthesizer known by such names as
ibmtts, ibm viavoice, eloquence, and voxin. It's the synthesizer jaws
uses by default. Some people prefer it over espeak. I prefer espeak
myself, but then again I've been using it for years and have gotten used
to it. I now can't understand how anyone could prefer eloquence when I
listen to it, which I do on mellisa's windows and linux box when I have
to maintain it. It has known and unfixable flaws on both linux and
windows. There are words that, if the synthesizer encounters it, it will
crash because it doesn't know how to pronounce them. Words like "c a e s
u r e" and "w e d h e s d a y" will crash it if put together into a
word. I've spelled them out so I don't crash anyone's synth.

Thanks

Hi, Kendell.

What is "ETI eloquence?" (Or is ETI an achronum for something?) I ask
because my wife might be more likely to use Linux if I can find speech
output that sounds like eloquence. I'd like it better myself, for
that matter. Thanks!

I did about 5 years ago on august 19, 2011. Are you thinking about doing
the same? If so, I'd suggest slowly easing into it. Make sure all or
most of the programs you use on windows exist in linux. If you can't
find the exact same programs, try to find substitutes that do the same
things. For example, iTunes doesn't exist on Linux, but there is a
program called gtkpod which does most of what iTunes can do, including
copying music over to the iPod/iPhone/iPad, converting as needed,
backing up the device, restoring the device, etc. I think the only thing
it can't do is buy songs from apple music or from iTunes itself. One big
thing I'd suggest doing is to try to get used to espeak in windows
before switching over, don't just jump over and erase your windows
partition. One of the worst things you can do is switch over to linux
and then decide you can't stand espeak. ETI eloquence does exist hear,
but it can be a little complicated to install. There are lots of people
on hear and other lists who would be happy to help you. If you're
looking for a distro that comes up speaking when you boot it and has a
good selection of software, try either ubuntu mate, vinux or sonar.
Sonar is the linux distribution I develop along with Kyle Brouhard,
jonathan Nadeau and Ryan Eversole. We are a very friendly community
hear, so don't be afraid to ask questions and provide feedback. About
the only thing that we don't take well is complaining. Windows just
works, this sucks, Linux is hard, etc.

Thanks
