Mark down is really great and LaTeX is equally or perhaps better but one has to go through quite a bit learning curve as compared to markdown.
So these 2 options serve my purpose.

Thanks for the update on recent MS Office and open document files; I
was unaware that MSO accepted these.


I agree with Jason White's suggestion of using the combination of
markdown and pandoc to generate documents of all kinds.  I can get a
much better idea of formatting and layout from markdown tags than I
can from a wysiwyg ui.
