Re: [orca-list] Small talking distro

Vinux4 fits that bill as it has both cd and dvd sized images.
Debian's net-install is very small.
Maybe you can figure out why arch did not boot, but as I have mentioned a few times here it requires much
more work to get together compared with the
other distros you have been experimenting with. You need to chroot and run several commands.
You can probably boot from a usb-memory stick, so doing that you can use any sized image.
Most Dells use f12 to override boot order if you do not have sighted help to reorder thigs in the bios. Many
Dells will just boot to a usb device if
there is no OS on the hard-drive, but if this is not the case just start repeated pressing f12 starting a
second or two after you press the power
button, and continue pressing it for several seconds, 10 should be much more than enough.
Then wait a couple seconds and press the up and down arrows a bit, making sure you have pressed the up arrow
more than down, and then last press the
down arrow once wait a second or so and press enter. If you get a beep instantly, or if the machine does not
boot redo the whole process, i.e. power off
wait a few secondes and do the key presses explained above, but this time try pressing the down arrow twice
instead of once, and if that does not work
do the same thing but with three down arrow presses.
I have installed several different Linux flavors onn four different Dell models from USB sticks, and a couple
of those models were of a similar ventage.
I know that ever Dell I have had or worked on uses f12 for the boot-order override key, but have heard others
say that some models use a different key
for this. Try a search to make sure, or tkae your chances and search if f12 does not do the trick.
Personally I allmost always install from usb instead of cd's or dvd's.

Hi,
I don't know if my reply to Burt which included a question regarding another
distro made it to the list, so I'll send in another.
I am trying to install Linux onto a Dell Dimension 8300, which had XP on it.
It seems that it must only have a CD drive, because everything I have tried
to boot to on DVD won't boot.
So I am looking for a talking distro, or one that I can call up Orca with,
which will fit onto a CD.
I tried the "Talking Arch", but it did not talk, as I thought that it should
come up talking.

Thanks for any ideas.
Glenn
