There is a Debian 8 live DVD.  I've played with it and might switch to 
Debian.  I even got Speakup working after using the terminal to install 
espeakup.  I don't know if its install process will allow me to have 
Speakup available on the hard drive for immediate use.  I have not so 
far gotten Speakup talking by way of the boot prompt.  Those things 
said, I recommend giving it a serious try.
