I think I know where you read that about removing pulse, or at least I knoow one place where that is
incorrectly stated.
As Kyle says, you can indeed change to a pure alsa system, but I would not try libao, at least not first. It
did not work for me and is certainly not
needed.
Just select pure alsa in your speechdispatcher configurations.
I am not sure pulse is the problem, but it might be.
Did you follow all the instructions, i.e. did you export the gtk module or modules that are recommended,
and did you apply the gsettings commands to
enable accessibility?
I have had excellent luck running a pure alsa system on Arch, but there are two cases where I had to make
some changes in what I would have other wise
installed.
Mangler must be rolled back to the next to the last release, think it ends in -3, and the newest version is
ending in -4. That is no biggy, easiest
done with downgrader or similar from the AUR.
If you use skype however you will need pulse, period.
As I said, I do not run pulse on my arch installations, but on manjaro I do.
You can use espeakup, but try the following to keep console speech.
You will probably need to run espeakup first as a user, not a system systemd service. The easiest way to do
this if you are not used tto working with
systemd service files would be to install the espeakup-git package from the AUR.
It has rather huge steps between voice rates, more than doublew in the default package. I can help you fix
that if need be off list.
Or, just save the espeakup file from /usr/bin before installing espeakup-git in case you are not happy with
the new rate configuration possibilities.
Then follow instructions, but use the espeakup user service option instead of espeakup.service.
Now when you want to start your GUI do
sudo systemctl stop espeakup user service Run startx, and then in a mate-terminal type sudo espeakup.
This should get you your console voice, i.e. speakup, espeakup and espeak back.
I run this as a script using gksudo.
If that does not work for you, auto start your gui with slim or similar and the for sure starting espeakup
with sudo will work,.
Write me off list and we can talk about anything that is unclear, or come on the talkingarch irc channel.

Hi guys. So, i got mate and arch installed on a system yesterday and
before reboot, i got orca running in the mate session without issue.
Here is where things get hairy. So i reboot and type startx with
speakup on so i could read errors. I had set orca to start
automatically, but it didn't start because it was conflicting with
espeakup. But even after killing espeakup in the arch consle, still no
orca after typing startx. Admitedly, i accidently installed the pulse
audio mate package, i'm not sure if this is causing issues. I read
somewhere that i can't remove it without breaking everything. So any
ideas? Maybe there is a demon conflict or something?
