Howdy,
nomnom :) a redesign is a fully redesigned new GUI. so almost written
from scratch. newly designed code, and maybe layout (i looks really
stalled, i do not use orca often. but my girlfriend do, she dont like it
because a "card layout" its not the best in things of navigation. I
agree with her that a more "list" orientated layout would be more
efficient (also in things like we are more able to keep things more
generic in the codebase, what lead to more easy contribution to orca).
A "clearup and modernization" its mosstly clean up the really stalled
code ( its hard to integrate some new things, thats what i learned in my
work on the orca beeps). no real name convention, confuse names
(combobox1, combobox2, combobox3), fix warnings while start the GUI,
port to more current techniques. :).
Yes i fully agree to you opinion that the orca settings should also
available without and control center AND on any DE or WM. but we could/
should it make more integrable in things of look and feel. So it !could!
be included as panel in a central way. whe sould not cut of the
posiblity to run the settings without an Control Center ( my opinion).
forking orca??? no way... we have to fight together :).
I m currently working on a mocup with a new layout. i think its more
smart, open and clear.
Took a look at this before you will hate it :). I will share it if i
finished that. (could take 1 -2 weeks)
i m shure you would like it :).
cheers chrys

Hi,
I would like to return to the topic, which is described in the subject line.
I have some fears regarding this, and they have been mentioned from some
of the participants in this discussion, but I would like to summarise
them from my point of view.
Firstly, what do you mean by "Redesign or clearup and modernization"? I
like the current design and I don't think that there is something which
should be removed. Do you think something is missing? So let's discusse
this.
Also, I'm very sceptical about moving the Orca settings into GNOME
Control Center. Why is this nesessary? What benefits will this give us?
Wouldn't it make configuring Orca harder from the users point of view?
And what about other desktop enviroments? If eventually the other
desktops, which are based on GNOME, some day manage to catch up, what
about the others like XFCE, LXDE/LXQT, KDE etc.?
I like GNOME 3, much more than GNOME 2, and use it every day, but what
if I some day would like to change it? Of course I'm very greatfull to
the GNOME guys, without who the accessibility of the Linux GUI would
have been very questionable, but I thought that Orca became not only a
screen reader for GNOME, but for every desktop enviroment.
Forking is possible of course, but I think that deviding the project
would not give us much benefit, cause there are very few people who have
the knolage to work on this kind of stuff already, and that will leed to
duplication, instead of those people working together.
Best wishes,
Zahari

God no! Please no virtual buffers! That's about the worst thing any
screen reader has ever done. That wasn't an innovation. The innovation
and advancement was in Orca flat out refusing to implement virtual
buffering, which not only makes the screen reader less clunky and
unwieldy, but greatly improves the overall browsing experience as well.
