Re: [orca-list] problem with orca/gnome sound

Where are you running orca text set up from? If you are doing it in the console, this error message is
normal since it needs an x session to work. If you get a screen reader on message when you log into gnome,
you should have orca talking. Are you able to log into your user account from the gdm login prompt? If so,
what happens when you do a control alt t or an alt f2? Do you get any speech then?

I hate to say it but you chose a very difficult path to use when returning to Linux if you removed pulseaudio
like that. There really is no need to do that anymore as the vast majority of the issues which made this
necessary don't apply anymore. I really almost would recommend starting over from scratch as who knows if
you have all the alsa alternatives to things like rhythmbox's gstreamer plugins and the alsa mixer installed.
It shouldn't be this hard anymore to get Orca talking on a new system. These days, we hit super alt s and
that is all.

Hi.
Ok, I changed the speech dispatcher configuration as you told me.
But I still get no sound at all from gnome.
Just screen reader loaded.
I run orca --text-setup, and that works.
But after that orca just gives me an error. "unable to connect to the desktop.
Should I need to reinstall debian all over again to get this working?

Your problem is with speech dispatcher. You have to tell it that you
are using alsa as the sound output and not pulse audio which is the default.
From your console session with Speakup, type spd-conf and press enter.
Then, follow the prompts for a user-specific setup. When you get to
the sound output question, type alsa and then hit enter. Proceed
through the remaining options. Once you are done, orca should talk in Gnome.

Hi.
I installed Debian Linux some Days ago.
There are no sounds at all in gnome.
I didn't want pulse audio, so I removed that.
I can get alsa to work in the console.
But not in gnome.
There was no sound when I had pulse audio installed either.
I thought that the problem was orca so I ran orca --text-setup.
The only message I got was the question if braille should be activated.
That was the only question.
Shouldn't there be more?
At least it was Before.
What can be wrong here?
/Kristoffer
