You might want to export DISPLAY=:0 before trying to run

to normal.

I tried that plus I found that I could start gnome-terminal with a
"--display=:0" but in both cases, I get some more strange errors
displayed and I will show them below. I also looked into the odd error
I saw in journalctl complaining about non utf-8 locale ANSI_X3.4-1968
not being supported but I also noticed that error showing up clear
back in December of 2014 and I was sure I used gnome-terminal back
then without problems so I'm dismissing any deals concerning locale
right now.

Here is the errors I get

steve linlap ~$ gnome-terminal --display=:0
Error constructing proxy for org.gnome.Terminal:/org/gnome/Terminal/Factory0: Error spawning command line
'dbus-launch --autolaunch=a9c880cb0d094a8e84f1cd34c184a9cc --binary-syntax --close-stderr': Child process
exited with code 1
steve linlap ~$ exit
exit

I have no idea what any of this means. GNOME internals go way over my
head!
