GNOME will usually have problems on systems with less than 1GB of RAM.
It wouldn't surprise me to find that low memory is possibly causing it
to fail to boot. I have somehow gotten GNOME booted on a machine with
512MB, but it's rare that it works these days. I generally put MATE on
such systems in order to minimize resource usage.
