First, I'm assuming you are talking a new version of Ubuntu, trusty in other words, and that you have mate
1.8 installed.
With 1.6, some things do not work access wise.
Now, you need to run following command. Oh, you'll need to get gsettings-editor installed first, at least
I've always had
to install this which I think should be installed by default. (should but isn't in case the language was not
clear)
gsettings set org.mate.interface accessibility true
needs this 11y stuph to get quite a few apps to be reaad at all by Orca.
gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.a11y.applications screen-reader-enabled true
Assuming you have some speech, you may not need that first one, but the 2nd command should get quite a few
apps that do
not speak with out it talking.
I'm assuming you have a qt-accessiblity.sh and gtk-access.sh file in /etc/profile.d/
They are just one line files that enable accessibilty stuff for qt and GTK respectively.
They could be other places, but this is what I did when I tested mate on Ubuntu-precise, but there were
issues as only the
older mate packages are aavailable for that release.
I'll past in the contents for those files below. The gtk bit works in .xinitrc for instance if you have one
of those in
your home dir, and may in some cases work inin a file in a gtrk dir, but I do not have good experiences
trying that one.
export QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1
'the file containing the line above may have been created when I installed qt-at-spi, think it was.
#!/bin/bash
export GTK_MODULES=gail:atk-bridge
This line must be manually added for xfce, mate, fluxbox, and lxde I think also. I have it in my .xinitrc
files, but also
in the profile.d dir as mentioned, and only in the latter location on Ubuntu as I do not have xinitrc there.

Dear,
Does somebody of us know if Firefox can be used in Ubuntu Mate atleast after
installation? I Am helpless to use it.
No feetback from Orca.
I have other issue.
Does Ubuntu Mate support kernel boot option access=v3 to enable correct
accessibility support?
Or i can normally transfer Ubuntu Mate iso image to USB stick by using DD or
other utility and press enter for four times to get Ubuntu mate working, and
then press ALT+F2 to run Orca.
It is inpossible to use applications with root privileges in live mode
excepts Ubuntu installer Ubiquity module thanks to the sh -s option, but it
do not work for gparted for example.
I Am so near to use my favourite Orca version with dynamic web page support
which i love so much, but other issue.
So i must really use Ubuntu 14.04 desktop with Gnome to use my favourite
Orca version.
