speech-dispatcher can use libao? I remember getting that working once,
and the only voice that would work with it was voxin. FOr some reason
espeak wouldn't work when speech-dispatcher was using libao.

I've just noticed a weird bug, I think it's a bug, in the latest orca mster, although it's been present
since at least
orca v3.12, possibly earlier. If speech-dispatcher crashes, which sometimes happens when using alsa, I
have a keyboard
shortcut that kills orca, speech-dispatcher and then runs orca --replace to restart it.
I think you can use libao with Speech-Dispatcher and avoid the crashes. I run
PulseAudio here and haven't noticed any issues, but obviously you're avoiding
that for some reason. Using Speech-Dispatcher with its ALSA module is known to
be unreliable.
