Well, I'm no longer using gnome on my systems. I do like gnome 3.14,
but they've just taken so much out that I take for granted in mate,
like the ability to select a sound theme in the gui, as well as make
my own desktop icon. The qt issues in mate appear to be related
specifically to qt4, but I'm not absolutely sure. This seems to be as
you said a holdover from gnome 2. Gnome has accessibility issues of
it's own, so neither environment is perfect. Personally, mate fits the
way i've learned to use a computer better than gnome does, but I won't
say one or the other is better, it depends on how you like to use a
computer. Windows 8 users coming to linux or mac fans tend to like
gnome better. People who use windows 7 and earlier, or who grew up on
the standard icons, menus, windows, panels, etc layout may like mate
or xfce better. TBH, mate needs some attention from either orca devs
or someone who knows the linux accessibility system much better than I
do. It's the christmas holidays, so I won't bug anyone to do so now,
but it *does* need to happen at some point if I'm going to be able to
say much more than, well, it doesn't work. Unfortunately I don't know
why, sorry.
