Re: [orca-list] sonar terminal question

Why not bug Sonar if speakup is not working in console rather than bug
Orca for missing lines in terminal apps?

imho a Linux PC without speakup is not an accessible PC.

hi
I've done a little research, and it appears most graphical terminal
emulators depends on a library called libvte, in a package called vte
in arch. If anyone knows enough about c or possibly c++ code to take a
look, the accessibility bugs might be there. I say this, because all
terminal emulators I've used, gnome-terminal, mate-terminal which I
think is just a gnome 2.x gnome-terminal fork, lxterminal, and
xfce4-terminal, all have the very same bugs to varying degrees. Gnome
terminal is the worst though. I mud a lot, and tintin is most usable
in lxterminal, but it still has the occasional issue. I wonder if
orca's issues with elinks, cgdisk, and other ncurses apps is caused by
this terminal bug? This has been going on for, well, since I think
gnome 2.x, and has either not improved much, or has gotten slightly
worse in the interveening years. I do agree, orca is fantastic, and
the amount of dedication that goes into it is amazing.

Yes, the more I learn about orca, the more I'm impressed with both

Orca should work just fine in a terminal. It has weird issues
sometimes, like not announcing the first line of text at the
top of the terminal and skipping entire lines of text. But
they're not frequent, and they odn't happen all the time.

GNOME still haven't accepted, or improved upon, the patch I
submitted to correct some of this by fixing an accessibility bug
in GNOME-Terminal. It's very frustrating to have a patch ignored
for release after release, and disappointing that the project
isn't sufficiently well managed to take care of it in a
professional manner.

We're really fortunate that Orca is so well maintained and that
bugs are responded to so promptly. Regrettably, there are other
projects (including within GNOME) where this isn't the norm.
