Hmm tryed that, and I get
unix unix-OptiPlex-780:~$ vlc -I ncurces
VLC media player 2.1.4 Rincewind (revision 2.1.4-0-g2a072be)
Remote control interface initialized. Type `help' for help.
[0x8ca66e0] main interface error: no suitable interface module
[0x8c78910] main libvlc error: interface "default" initialization failed
unix unix-OptiPlex-780:~$. Unless again the configfile is goofed.

Also, vlc has a nice ncurses interface you can use from a console.
vlc -I ncurses
will start this. You can use shortcuts and menus to do everything. It takes a bit of gettting used to the
browse mode, but
does in the gui as well.
I use VLC from both GUI and CLI.

Thanks, will try that, already added it to ~/.profile, will see how it
goes.. Shame really cause I use vlc primarily as my media player, now using
cmus strictly till i can get menus etc working with vlc correctly, hopefully
this will fix the issues. Will know the next time I reboot. Thanks again!

Check /etc/profile.d/ and see if you have an accessability file for QT there.
If so, then you should not need to add anything in your home-dir, but it will not hurt.

Edit ~/.profile, and add this line:
export QT_ACCESSIBILITY=1
On next login, the variable will be in your environment.
To get it immediately, you can
source .profile
