First, I wouldn't say "everybody" is moving towards systemd. For one
thing, it requires a lot more resources than the other init systems,
specifically DBus which makes it unsuitable for small systems with low
power and memory. I'm thinking of ARM in particular. The only
"everybody" I know of who has for sure switched to systemd and/or intends
to do so permanently is Fedora and Red Hat. I must confess that I don't
follow most other distributions except Debian and Ubuntu, so I don't know
about Arch and Gentoo.
I've seen a number of complaints on Planet Debian that systemd is too
bloated and quite a few developers don't seem to like it. My
understanding is that Debian will switch to Upstart. Since the BSD family
has its own init system, I'm not sure if they'll port Upstart to FreeBSD
or not. I think I read that it now runs on the Hurd. My own experiences
with Upstart were favorable and I like it better. I don't really see
Debian switching to systemd any time soon, at least not as the default.
Of course it's packaged if one wants to switch, just as Upstart is now.

should go away. We're in a period of transition at the moment. I don't
know what Debian will do, as they also want to support non-Linux
kernels (FreeBSD and GNU/Hurd).
