Hello, Joanie.
Yes, the status selector is expanded. When it has the focus,, and not
expanded, Orca says "Status Selector toggle button not pressed". I tried
to use the up and down arrow keys to try to navigate it while it is not
expanded, but the next available window element is selected rather than
traversing the list of statuses.
I believe that Dave Hunt wrote to me and mentioned that he did not have
this problem. On this Linux Mint system Pidgin version 2.10.0 is used as
well as Orca 3.2.1. this isn't a big problem for me, but I just wanted
to post in case anyone else knew or did not know about it. I am going to
keep tinkering with this, though, and see what happens.
Thanks for the reply, and for all of the hard work!

Hey Robert.
but if I would for example

announcing the currently highlighted status.
If by highlighted you literally mean highlighted, I'm guessing that you
have the combo box expanded (i.e. so that all the options are shown on
screen at once). In which case the accessible item is a menu and Orca
(by original design) does not allow one to flat-review menus. See the
following bug (which is one option -- but not the only one) I will be
implementing to help alleviate the greyed-out menu item problem:
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=667087
In the meantime, if you change the selection by not expanding the combo
box first, but just Up/Down Arrowing, does Orca read the combo box as
its value changes?
Take care.
