Hello Robert!
  I use pidgin. I'm neither an Orca buff nor a Pidgin expert though. But: if I 
remember correctly the numpad is also used to control the speech output. I 
think 7, 5 and 2 were used to speak the current letter, word or line. At least 
something "current" or in focus. So it may be, that Orca is confused by that. 
Can't you use the cursor keys to change your status?
