Yes, I use espeak. I never tried festival. Frankly, the flite voice
is awful enough that I never wanted to deal with the bloated sluggish
festival.
Dunno why you are having the output issues though. I sure wish these
sound issues in Linux weren't such a hassle. Bring back the hardware
synth, that's what I say. <smile> Of course, we need external ports
for that. That renews my interest in developing a speech dispatcher
module for external synths.

Follow my previous comments concerning PulseAudio! What do you bet, if
you comment out all the pulse stuff in /etc/asound.conf and basically
cripple pulse that speech dispatcher will work better. I am not
experiencing these speech slow-downs. Also I run speech dispatcher as
a central service and with ALSA and LIBAO and all seems fine in that
area.
