HTML 5 should make it easier to do this, with its Web Forms 2.0 component.
I agree that native elements are to be preferred. Aria was always regarded as
an interim solution until languages such as HTML were upgraded. Interim
solutions tend to become long-term solutions very easily, though.
On the Orca side, as long as the web browser reveals the correct role and
state, whether Aria or an HTML form control is used, everything should work
correctly for the user.
