Re: [orca-list] Audiobooks

Yes, that does help! Thank you. I managed to spend my Sunday free time
playing with Audacity and trying out different audio extractors that I
got one disc of the book onto my driver where I wanted it and then didnt
have time to listen to the book. /lol/ But I'm taking notes o I can
start contributing ways and means when others ask. VLC does look very
interesting, so I will try out your suggestions when I have the time to
play again. /smile/ I do have future work-related reasons for learning
more about working with audio files, so it's all good.

Hello again, Tami.

I did a small bit more testing with VLC. Orca will not read the menus
for me in VLC, but if I open a file using CTRL+O, the Open File window
will appear; Orca does read the contents of this window for me.

There are hotkeys which have been preset for speeding up and slowing
down playback speed.

Please note that when I say "standard keyboard" in the following
statements, I mean a standard U.S. English QWERTY keyboard layout. I am
not at all familiar with other keyboard styles, so I apologize for that;
if you live in the United States, you very likely have a standard QWERTY
keyboard.

1. To speed up the playback of a file, just press the closing bracket
key ("]"), which is the second key to the right of the "P" key on a
standard keyboard.

2. To slow down playback of a file, just press the opening bracket key
("["), which is the first key to the right of the "P" key on a standard
keyboard.

3. To return to the normal playback rate (the original playback rate) of
a file, just press the equal-sign key ("="), which is the second key to
the right of the "0" key at the top (the "number row") of a standard
keyboard.

I hope that this helps, and that you can get to enjoy listening to your
audiobooks soon!

If I can be of any further help, please let me know.

Take care.

Good information. I'll keep VLC around in case I want to use when/if the
accessibility gap is fixed or I decide it's worth having my sighted
roommates help me set up hot keys and memorize them.

I am sorry. I forgot to add that the option with which to increase the
playback speed of a file in VLC is found under Playback, Faster (fine).
You can actually create shortcut keys to speed up and slow down playback
if you go to the Tools menu, open the Preferences window, and then you
will find a button to the left labeled "Hotkeys". Through this page you
can set shortcut keys for many different things.

Although this can be quite customizable and efficient, it does not at
all negate the fact that the menus were not read out loud. This could be
different for other users, though. I am using Orca in Linux Mint 11.

Nevertheless, it seems that VLC would be a very viable option for the
task at hand.

Is VLC accessible to Orca? That has functions to speed/slow audio.

If I remember correctly, I believe that there is a plugin for
Audacious (a lightweight audio player) which allows for speeding up
of an audio file. When I get some time, I'll have to check it out a
little more in-depth and let you know.

  Hi Tami,

Well, I don't know about a media player per say, but you can certainly
open the mp3, ogg, or whatever format you are using in Audacity and
then go to the effects menu and change the speed or use the speech
compressor option, and resave the book at your favorite speed.

To install Audacity, if you haven't already done so, is do
  "sudo apt-get install audacity"
from the terminal and apt-get will fetch Audacity and install it.
Also you might want to install lame as well if you are working with
  mp3s.
