[orca-list] Help with Ubuntu 10.04 and sound card recognition

Guys,

It's been a long time far from the list. In fact i was not very active, since I had some struggles on my side, but things are getting back into place.

I'm planning to install Ubuntu 10.04 on my desktop, but I'm having a dificulty on getting sound to work through Live CD.

My machine is an Athlon X2 4000, 2.11Ghz, 2gb of RAM, the mother board is an Asus m2n-SLI with built-in sound card, and I also have an Delta Audiophile 2496 connected on my computer.

I've tested the AMD64bits version, and after some investigation I got stuck into the following: Booted through Live CD with the accessibility with screen reader enabled, Ubuntu loaded propperly, except sound. Checked the sound control with sighted assistance, the levels are shown as if it was possible to hear something. Then I've tried the alsamixer utility and, to my surprise, The only card recognized by the alsamixer was the Audiophile 2496, which for some reason I was not expecting it to be this way. The built-in sound card is enabled via the BIOS.

A lot of sites suggest that M-Audio Delta Audiophile 2496 and Ubuntu don't work well with Alsa and Pulseaudio, and I've read that OSS is the best alternative for users of this particular card. I'm also planning to test Ardour which seems to be GTK-based, but of course I'd use the desktop as my working environment.

I was happy that at least, My Delta was recognized, but I need a clue on how to make things work before installing the system. I wouldn't love to lose the freedom of installing and setting up my computer with Ubuntu the way we are capable of doing today, with the Orca's assistance.

Any advice on this subject will be very, very appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your support.

Sincerely,

Edu Camargo.
