I've tested the AMD64bits version, and after some investigation I
got stuck into the following:
Booted through Live CD with the accessibility with screen reader
enabled, Ubuntu loaded propperly, except sound. Checked the sound
control with sighted assistance, the levels are shown as if it was
possible to hear something. Then I've tried the alsamixer utility
and, to my surprise, The only card recognized by the alsamixer was
the Audiophile 2496, which for some reason I was not expecting it to
be this way. The built-in sound card is enabled via the BIOS.

If the live CD allows you to do this, run sshd, set a root password and log in
using ssh from another machine.

It might simply be that the volume settings need to be changed. First, run
aplay -l to find out for sure which cards have been recognized. You should be
able to use amixer to change the settings (e.g., to increase the volume).
Other programs that may help are:
lshw to obtain hardware details, and lsmod to find out what kernel modules are
loaded - there should be one for each sound card, plus the Alsa modules.
