HI,
well, I haven't tried windows xp, but a while back I setup a windows server 2k8 vm in kvm and it was fine.
the kvm command line is a good bit simpler than virtual box, but also has les, power, which is proably what
you want.
I have a server that I use virtual box on, and yeah, using virtual box on the command line isn't the easiest
thing, but it can be done, I don't know anything about VBoxGTK.
I don't know much about vmware, but I believe the free edition's administration is a web based thing, so
while it might be accessible, I doubt it'll be fun.
So, I think you'll want to use kvm.
