To answer your thunderbird question, you might try and start
completely over again to create a mail account.  I'm quite certain one
of the choices may be POP3.  Just choose that instead of IMAP and fill
in the wizard.  Sorry I can't offer more details as I prefer IMAP all
around and have all my mail systems configured accordingly.

In addition to the .fetchmailrc file I sent you privately, look
closely at the man pages for fetchmail.  That's where I got all my
information.  You might have to read it over several times to grasp
everything but I got info from none else.
