This seems intresting, and maybe a good idea, I'm not quiete sure.
This definitely sounds like it will involve a fairly large amount of
configuration code,

Actually, quite the opposite. All the code is there already. The code
for the binding basically has empty values. All that would need to be
done for taking an unknown binding and turning it into a bound command
is add a letter and a modifier. And by add, I mean find the place in the
code where the letter should be typed and type that letter.

In other words, in the amount of time it took me to write this response,
I could have bound a bunch of things and also refilled my coffee.

Mind you, if we want to do something clever, such as add new modes and
settings and the like, that could take a tad longer.
