Thanks for the reply. I'm thinking of getting the DECtalk USB, as I
don't have a serial port, and the USB is probably more readily
available. Can Orca/Emacspeak/speakup use that?

To avoid these conflicts, you could run Emacs with Emacspeak inside Gnome.

As an aside, I was browsing Emacs documentation and noticed a manual entry
about DBUS support under Emacs. Given that the entire desktop accessibility
infrastructure is moving to DBUS, this could raise interesting
opportunities.
